Have a question about on-demand Snapchat geofilters for startups? In this post we answer seven of the most frequently asked questions about using on-demand Snapchat geofilters for startup businesses.
With the growing popularity of Snapchat, startups are quickly recognizing the endless opportunities it represents for spreading brand awareness.
In particular, Snapchat geofilters have presented an opportunity to harness a person’s desire to share fleeting snippets of their daily lives and whereabouts with friends. With such a new concept, it can be difficult to know exactly where to start. At Marketing Supply Co, we encourage startups to experiment with geofilters to increase awareness of their brand.
Use these commonly asked questions to get the answers you need to become better acquainted with on-demand Snapchat geofilters for startups.
A geofilter is the actual filter, or overlay, that the Snapchat user selects for their photo or video. The geofilter is available only within a specific geographic area. The boundary of this area is called the geofence.
Think of a geofence as an invisible fence. Once a Snapchat user steps outside of the geofence you defined, they will no longer see your geofilter as an option to use as an overlay on their photo or video. In order to do so, they would need to step back within the boundaries of your geofence.
You must apply your filter to a minimum of 20,000 square feet. The largest coverage available for a geofence is 5 million square feet.
It depends how much space you want to cover and how long you want the geofilter to last.
Filters have been known to go for as little as $5 for 20,000 square feet. However, it is important to note that prices have been seen to fluctuate—and this has seemingly depended upon demand or the importance/draw of a certain location.
The only real way to know is to get the estimate by uploading your geofilter first and then selecting the other parameters such as date and time. This will provide you with a cost. This is before you press submit, so there are no surprises here.
You can set your geofilter to last for up to a maximum of 30 days. However, you can set the length of time to be in hours, too. So if there is a certain event happening at a location for only a few hours, you can set your geofence for that specific timeframe to get your brand in front of your target audience.
Seven spots seems to be the limit on Snapchat geofilters based on what we’ve gathered. However, this could change at any given time. The best way to find out if you’re able to reserve the geofence for your startup is to create a geofilter and submit it with your desired location, date range and timeframe to see if it goes through.
Currently, Snapchat allows you to view two metrics for your Snapchat geofilter—uses and views. Uses are the number of times your geofilter was applied to a snap or story. Views refer to the number of times a snap or story with your filter was viewed.
What does this mean? In terms of marketing for startups, Snapchat is very much an awareness play. However, awareness is extremely important for startups. All too often awareness is something that gets pinned as “frilly” as startups look to prove conversions early on. In the end, building a solid foundation for awareness early on will set you up for conversions down the road.
To view the metrics for your Snapchat geofilter, you would log in to your account, select your name, and choose “My Orders.” That page is where you would select your geofilter and scroll down to find the metrics.
To create a Snapchat geofilter for your business, you would need to hire an agency or graphic designer make one for you. If you’re particularly design savvy, you could also create this yourself.
Note that if you opt to create one yourself, you will need to meet some criteria on file size, image dimensions and use of trademarks in order to have your business geofilter approved.
To get Snapchat’s approval for your geofilter as quickly as possible and to ensure it goes through successfully, we recommend hiring someone for the project who has experience creating on-demand Snapchat geofilters for startups.
