In this edition of Our Favorite Detroit Startups, we’re focusing on apparel. The apparel industry is undeniably on the rise in Detroit, and, here at Marketing Supply Co., we love a fresh pair of sneaks so this post was inevitable.
When it comes to the history of the apparel industry in Detroit, the city has deep roots. Our history begins as a mecca for fur traders and buyers. Then, with the start of the industrial revolution, evidence of our inextricable ties to manufacturing can be found in Carhartt’s line of industrial workwear.
As Detroit continues to position itself at the helm of innovation and small business development in the state, the apparel industry in the city and the state is looking to expand further than ever before. Check out some of the up-and-coming Detroit startups taking the apparel game to the next level.
With a new fashion hub on the rise in New Center, Detroit, we’re taking a look at what’s happening in the apparel industry in Detroit. Here are six of the coolest up-and-coming Detroit apparel brands:
Female-owned and operated by Roslyn Karamoko, Detroit is the New Black is transforming the idea of what a retail space is supposed to be. Located on the 1400 block of Woodward Ave—blocks away from Campus Martius—DITNB injects pride and flare into the fabric of the community and collaborates with other Detroit artists and apparel startups to create an inclusive, empowering space. The store features local brands like The Lip Bar, Xenophora, and Vajze, and more alongside its own products. As Detroit continues to rise as an “it” place to be, DITNB has been able to evolve beyond the name, bringing art, design, and couture closer to the fingertips of Detroiters.
Embodying Michigan’s mid-western values, Detroit Denim’s old-fashioned approach is just what was missing from the Detroit retail scene. Located off the cobblestoned streets of Franklin, customers can shop for jeans in the storefront while the design and production factory churns out products in the back. As denim continues to be a staple in everyday wear, and consumers start to crave sustainable clothing options, Detroit Denim fits the needs of the area so simply it’s bound to be a classic brand for time to come.
A viral T-shirt graphic—even acknowledged by late night icon, Stephen Colbert—that evolved into a movement, stemming from the continued economic downturn and eventual bankruptcy of the city. A statement that completely sums up the attitudes of Detroiters perfectly. Other cities and corporations reinvented the saying and graphic for their value, a sign of a hit. Pop-ups bred throughout the city until eventual brick & mortars in Detroit’s historic Eastern Market and Greektown established this startup apparel company as a destination for in and out of towners.
The only plain white tee that you will ever need. Lazlo’s ethics are evident in both their products and the workforce behind their American made apparel. This men’s clothing line is not only sourced from ethical organic cotton for the softest feel, but it’s also made and manufactured by ex-inmates. Lazlo’s mission for change is woven right into the fibers of a t-shirt.
Featured on the popular show Shark Tank, inventive clothing brand Ash & Erie found a gap in the men’s clothing market for apparel made specifically to fit men 5’9 and below. This startup (and client of ours) took what they learned from their experience on Shark Tank and set out to be a leader in this niche market.
A technology-driven apparel company, saving all of us who are victims of overactive sweat glands. This Detroit startup company is making stylish, cotton, and, most importantly, sweat resistant button-up shirts for men and women that will keep you dry even in your most stressed moments.
